With 43 players in all, grades 7-12, the Stars have plenty of skaters, almost too many for practice, according to Coach John Pulsifer, who starts his third year with the team. His overall record stands at 25-29 and 10-21 in the rugged Central Lakes Con- ference. The Stars compete in large Class AA, Section 8, based on school enrollment of the coopera- tive program that includes Rocori (18 skaters); New London-Spicer (13 Skaters); Paynesville (8 skaters); Albany (2 skaters); Eden Valley-Watkins (1 skater); and St. Johns Prep (1 skater). "We've got pretty good size and pretty good speed," said Pul, sifer of his team. "Hopefully, the grit is going to be the strength of our team." Led by Captains Joe Spaulding, Senior (NL-S), Eric Zimmer, Senior (Rocori) and Matthew Prozinski, Junior (Ro- cori), the Stars return veteran leadership. The Stars return experience on the blue line in senior Mitchell Feldhege (Rocori), Prozinski, fellow juniors Ethan Parsons (NL-S), and Bryce Sav- age (Paynesville). "These guys played together last year," said Pulisfer. "They should know the system." The Stars lost only one regu- lar defenseman from their five- man rotation last year, Reed Pfannenstein (Rocori). Senior Nathan Schultz (Paynesville) is in the mix to be the fifth defense- man this winter for the Stars. "I think we should have good de- fense. We only lost one defense- man. Hopefully, well be solid on the defensive end and with the puck," Pulisfer explained. In net, the Stars lost goalie Chris Skluzacek (Rocori), who averaged 30 saves a game last year with a .903 save percentage to graduation. Junior Trevor Meed (Paynesville) and sopho- more Nick Skluzacek (Rocori) will likely split time in the net this year. Meed went 2-1 last year backing up Chris with a 3.30 goals against average and a save percentage of .891. "We should have good goaltending for the next few years," said Pulisfer. Up front, the Stars lost six of heir top seven scorers from last year. Only sophomore Grant Thompson (Paynesville) returns. As a ninth grader he was fifth on the team in points (5 goals, 9 as- sists, 14 points). Thompson, said Pulsifer, "has a natural ability to be in the right place at the right time." So far, the top nine forwards this winter appear to be: Thomp- son, senior Blake Karsch (Pay- nesville), Spaulding, Zimmer, junior Cody Isifer (NL-S) jun- ior Chris Thormodson (Rocori), junior Dylan Thrush (NL-S), sophomore Hunter Sjoberg (NL- S), and ninth grader Connor Beltz (Rocori). Parsons (3-6=9), Spaulding (3- 6=9), Prozinski (1-6=7), Zimmer (3-2--5), Savage (1-2=3), Feldhege (1-1=2), and Karsch (1-1=2) also scored last year for the Stars, but the Stars lost 59 goals to gradua- tion and return just 18. "We need to find a way to score," said Pul- sifer. The team - which won 25 games the past two years, going a team best 14-13 in 2011-12 - also has three ninth graders, an eighth grader; and a seventh grader on the team this winter. "So we have a few youngsters," said Pulsifer, who sees lots of skill in the young players but is concerned that they will be ready for the physicality of varsity hockey, so will start most of them on the junior varsity, despite their doing well at the team's first scrimmage. The Stars scrimmaged Hutchinson, Willmar and Litch- field on Saturday, November 16th, in Litchfield with a com- bined varsity and junior varsity grouping of players and did well, with a variety of highlights and pleasant surprises. Because NL-S will play in the Class AAA football final against St. Croix Lutheran on Saturday, November 30th, the team is missing several NL-S players who are still practicing football. The Stars could miss as many as four varsity players for their first game against Litchfield/Dassel- Cokato in Richmond on Friday, November 22, 7:15 PM. Their next game be at Sauk Centre on Tuesday, November 26th. The following game will be 12/3 versus Willmar at Richmond Arena, with JV starting at 5:30, followed by varsity at 7:15, after that they open the Central Lakes Conference schedule with a game at powerhouse Brainerd War- riors, 12/5 at 7:15. Come cheer on the Stars for what is shaping up to be a strong group of hockey players. !
